Harold Smart Competition 2009
RSCM annual composition competition in memory of Dr Harold Smart
All information given below refers to the 2009 competition, which is now closed to entries.
The 2010 competition is being run in conjunction with the King James Bible 2011 Trust, and details can be found on the Trust's webpage at www.2011trust.org. In 2011, the Royal School of Church Music will revert to its annual competition, in a similar format to that outlined below for 2009.
This year’s competition is for a setting of an anthem written specifically for children's choirs, particularly at primary school level.
The work submitted must be new and composed in 2009. The work should be a simple but interesting anthem not exceeding five minutes, with the accompaniment (where required) not technically demanding. It should be written for a choral group to sing in worship, and may be in unison, two, or three upper vocal parts. The work as a whole should reflect contemporary musical styles.
Composers may choose their own words, but must have permission for the use of any copyright text.
Entry details
The closing date is 1 October 2009. Each composer may submit only one entry (but please send in two copies of your entry).
Entries should be submitted by post to: Leah Smith, The Royal School of Church Music, 19 The Close, Salisbury, SP1 2EB, UK.
Manuscripts should not bear the name of the composer. Entrants are required to complete the downloadable entry form (see below) which they should attach to the manuscript, but which will not be seen by the adjudicators. Competitors who wish to have their manuscripts returned should supply a stamped addressed envelope of suitable size.
Winning entry prize
The winning entry will be awarded a prize of £100, and may be showcased in a service performed by the Salisbury Cathedral Junior Choir in 2010.
The adjudicators reserve the right not to make an award if the standard of entries does not appear to warrant it. The adjudicators will not enter into any correspondence with competitors.
