Lindsay Gray: the sixth Director of the RSCM

Lindsay Gray comes to the RSCM having been Headmaster for fourteen years of the Cathedral School at Llandaff in Cardiff. During his time there he doubled the school roll from 300 to 600 and founded and directed a girls' cathedral choir. In this podcast he talks about the current church music scene and engaging and encouraging young people, particularly boys, to take up church music. He also discusses his personal approach to the new role which he took up on May 1st.

  • Born: July 1953. Grew up in Nottinghamshire.
  • Married with two grown-up daughters.
  • Cambridge University MA in Music. Choral Scholar at King's under Willcocks and Ledger.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Durham University. ARCO.
  • Sings counter-tenor, plays organ and piano, and trains choirs.
  • Sang as deputy lay clerk at Southwell Minster and as a Choral Scholar at Durham Cathedral.
  • Taught at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and held Director of Music posts at Grenville College, Bideford, Queen's College, Taunton and Cheltenham College.
  • Was parish organist at a church near Cardiff. Founded and developed church choir.
  • Was Headmaster at Brightlands School, Newnham-on-Severn, and the Cathedral School, Llandaff in Cardiff. Founded Girl Choristers at Llandaff Cathedral and doubled the numbers on school roll.
  • Enjoys cricket (leg-spin bowler and grafting batsman) and golf.
  • Fan of Renaissance and Baroque music - especially Henry Purcell.
