Join us in the beautiful County Durham market town of Barnard Castle and explore hymns old and new for the seasons from Easter to Trinity with Dr Martin Clarke (Elvet Methodist and one of the editors of Singing the Faith) and Professor John Richard Watson (Dick Watson) of Durham University in a short rehearsal, followed by tea and cake and then a service of Songs of Praise. 15:00 rehearsal, 16:15 tea/cake, 17:15 Songs of Praise.

Organised by Durham Area and aimed at churches in Ripon and Leeds, North and East Yorkshire and Durham.

Andrew Robinson (an experienced church musician workshop leader and teacher) will lead an inspirational workshop on how to use music well within worship even if your congregation is small, your church is without an organist/pianist and all in the context of the rural setting.

The day starts with welcome drinks at 10:00 and Session 1 begins at 10:30. (Drinks provided. Lunch either bring a packed lunch or pop out into Richmond.)

This is a day aimed at members of congregations, ordained and lay leaders of worship. We will explore ideas, resources and music for both Service of the Word and The Eucharist.

Explore the music for the festival as a whole choir and then enjoy fish and chips. James Lancelot will guide us through the music for the 2017 Festival which is celebrating the 500th Anniversary of Bernard Gilpin (The Apostle of the North) and is entitled Faith, Generosity and Service. This will be our opportunity to say farewell to James Lancelot who retires this summer.

The 2017 Festival is celebrating the 500th Anniversary of Bernard Gilpin (The Apostle of the North) and is entitled Faith, Generosity and Service. The Area rehearsal will take place in the church were Gilpin is buried.

A celebration of the life of Bernard Gilpin, known as the ‘Apostle of the North’.

Through music, word and scripture we explore the life of Bernard Gilpin (1517 – 1583), often known as ‘Apostle of the North’. This specially devised service includes music from his lifetime up to the present day. A festival book will be available from early summer 2017 (see ‘Launching Music for the 2017 Area Festival’ event 6 July 2017). 13:30 arrive, 14:00 rehearsal, 16:00 tea (not provided); 17:15 service.
